History of Chatuchak Market
Moving to a New Home
The Chatuchak Weekend Market wasn't always in its current spot. A long time ago, it was located in a place called Sanamluang.
Around 1978 (Buddhist Era 2521), the Thai government decided that Sanamluang should become a public park for people to relax and exercise. So, the market needed a new home.
Finding a New Location
Thailand’s government authorities found a new area for the market. This new spot was in the Pahonyothin area, connected to the southern part of what is now Chatuchak.
The market moved there and was first called the "Pahonyothin Area Market."
Becoming Chatuchak Weekend Market
Later, in 1987 (Buddhist Era 2530), the market's name was officially changed to "Chatuchak Weekend Market." It has been known by this name ever since.
