The Chauncey B. Leonard House is a really old and important house in Berlin, Vermont. It was built around 1845, making it one of the oldest homes in the town. This house is special because it was built in the Berlin Corners area, which used to be the main center of Berlin. Because of its history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

What is the Chauncey B. Leonard House?

The Chauncey B. Leonard House is located at the corner of Shed Road and Crosstown Road. It's not far from Paine Turnpike, which was once a very important road. The house is also near Pond Brook, where mills used to get their power from the water.

How Does the House Look?

This house is a simple, 1-1/2 story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof and its outside walls are covered with clapboards. The front of the house faces Shed Road and has five windows across. The main door has a porch with cool Victorian-style posts and railings. Some windows on the side facing Crosstown Road have pretty, decorative shingles above them.

A Look Back at Berlin's History

The area called Berlin Corners started to grow into a small village in the early 1800s. It became even more important after the town's first meeting house burned down in 1838. Pond Brook, which flows out of Berlin Pond, was key to the town's early economy. It provided water power for mills that ground grain and sawed wood.

Who Lived Here?

Chauncey Leonard, who was a blacksmith, built this house around 1845. For many years, the house was connected to the people who owned and ran the local mills. Later, in 1892, a woman named Mary Perkins bought the house. She lived there for forty years and made some changes to the house, adding what are called Queen Anne style details. These changes made the house look even more interesting!
