Chautauqua (pronounced chuh-TAW-kwuh) is a unique community located in Ohio, USA. It's not a city or a town with its own government, but rather an "unincorporated community." This means it's a place where people live together, but it's managed by the larger counties it sits within. Chautauqua is special because it stretches across two different counties: Montgomery County and Warren County.

Discovering Chautauqua, Ohio

Chautauqua was founded a long time ago, in 1901. It was created as a place where people could live and learn together. The community started with a large area of land, about 310 acres (which is like 235 football fields!). Around 200 homes were built there for the people who wanted to be part of this special place.

What is a Chautauqua Community?

The idea behind Chautauqua communities came from a movement in the late 1800s and early 1900s. These places were designed for education, culture, and recreation. People would gather to learn about art, music, science, and important topics of the day. It was like a summer camp for families, but with a focus on learning and self-improvement. The people living in Chautauqua, Ohio, were part of the Miami Valley Chautauqua Association, which helped organize these activities.

Where is Chautauqua Located?

This interesting community is found on the west side of the Great Miami River. This river acts as a natural border between the two counties that Chautauqua calls home.

Because it's in two counties, Chautauqua is also part of two different larger city areas. The part in Montgomery County is considered part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The part in Warren County is part of the Cincinnati–Middletown Metropolitan Statistical Area. This just means it's close enough to these big cities to be connected to their economies and communities.
