The Story of Cheez-It Crackers
How Cheez-It Began
The story of Cheez-It crackers started in 1907. A person named Weston Green created a company called the Green & Green Company in Dayton, Ohio. This company made many baked snacks. These included Dayton crackers, graham crackers, and gingersnaps. During World War I, they even made hardtack, which was a hard biscuit for soldiers.
On March 31, 1921, Green introduced Cheez-It crackers. They were a brand new product. The company described the cracker as a "baked rarebit". This was a fancy way to say it was like melted cheese on toast. Just a few months later, on May 23, 1921, the first Cheez-It logo was officially registered.
Changes in Ownership
In 1932, a company called Sunshine Biscuits bought the Green & Green Company. This meant Cheez-It crackers became part of Sunshine Biscuits. Sunshine Biscuits helped Cheez-Its become popular all across the country.
Later, in 1996, another company called Keebler bought Sunshine Biscuits. Then, in 2001, Kellogg's bought Keebler. This brought Cheez-It crackers under the Kellogg's family. Cheez-Its were officially launched in Canada in January 2020.
In late 2023, Kellogg's changed its business structure. Its snack food business, including Cheez-It, became part of a new company called Kellanova.
What Makes Cheez-It Crackers Special?
Cheez-It crackers are famous for their unique shape. They are about 26 by 24 millimeters. Many people think they are perfect squares, but they are actually tiny rectangles! Kellogg's proudly says that Cheez-It crackers are made with real cheese. This is what gives them their cheesy flavor.
