A Look Back: The Chemical Society's Story

Why the Society Started

One main goal of the Chemical Society was to hold meetings. At these meetings, scientists could share new discoveries. They could also discuss their observations. The Society would then publish these findings.

Growing Importance

In 1847, the Society became even more important. It received a special recognition called a Royal Charter. This meant the Society's role grew. It now helped advance science. It also helped develop ways to use chemistry in industry. Famous chemists from other countries joined too. One was August Wilhelm von Hofmann, who became its president in 1861.

Women Join the Ranks

For a long time, only men could be full members. But things changed! In 1904, Edith Humphrey was a pioneer. She is thought to be the first British woman to get a doctorate in chemistry. She and 18 other women chemists asked to join the Society. Finally, in 1919, women were allowed to become full members. Edith Humphrey was then elected as a fellow.

Why It Succeeded

Before the Chemical Society, other chemistry groups had tried and failed. The Chemical Society of London succeeded for a special reason. It brought together two types of chemists. It combined those who worked in technology and those who worked in academics. This mix made it very strong.

Becoming the Royal Society of Chemistry

Over the years, the Society did more and more. It became a major publisher of chemistry books and journals. On May 15, 1980, it joined forces with three other groups. These were the Royal Institute of Chemistry, the Faraday Society, and the Society for Analytical Chemistry. Together, they formed the Royal Society of Chemistry.
