Cherry Hill and The Gallops, Barton Mills, is a special place for nature in Suffolk, England. It's known as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (often called an SSSI). This means it's officially protected because it has important plants, animals, or geology. This particular SSSI covers about 10.4 hectares (that's about 25 acres, or the size of 15 football fields!). It's located just south of a village called Barton Mills.

Discovering Cherry Hill and The Gallops

This area was officially recognized as an SSSI in 1985. It's also listed as a Grade 2 site in the Nature Conservation Review. This review helps identify the most important places for wildlife across the country. Being Grade 2 means it's very significant for protecting nature.

A Home for Rare Plants and Insects

Cherry Hill and The Gallops is a "biological" SSSI, which means it's important for living things. The site includes parts of road verges, which are the grassy areas along the sides of roads. These verges have a special type of soil called calcareous grassland. This kind of soil is rich in lime, which helps unique plants grow.

  • Rare Plants: You can find four types of plants here that are very rare across the whole country. There are also two plants that are uncommon just in this local area.
    • One of these uncommon local plants is called sand catchfly.
    • Another is yellow medick.
  • Rare Insects: The site also has a strip of pine trees. This pine forest is home to several types of insects that are quite rare.

How to Visit This Special Place

Even though it's a protected area, you can still visit parts of Cherry Hill and The Gallops. There are public access points along the roadside verges. You can find these stretches along Herringswell Road and Worlington Road. It's a great way to see some of the unique plants and enjoy nature.
