Cheryl I. Harris is an American expert in law. She is known for her work as a critical race theorist. This means she studies how race and racism have shaped laws and society. She teaches about civil rights and civil liberties at the UCLA School of Law. Civil rights are the basic rights all people should have, like freedom of speech. Civil liberties are protections from government actions.
Professor Harris is widely recognized for her important paper called "Whiteness as Property." It was published in the Harvard Law Review in June 1993. In this paper, she explains how being seen as "white" gave people certain advantages and value in a society that once allowed slavery.
Cheryl Harris is also the mother of the famous American rapper, songwriter, and record producer Earl Sweatshirt.
