Chicago Urban League facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Chicago Urban League is an organization in Chicago, Illinois, that started in 1916. It is part of the National Urban League. Its main goal is to help people, especially African Americans, find jobs, start businesses, get affordable homes, and receive good education.

The League was created because many African Americans were moving to Chicago during a time called the Northern Migration. This was when many Black families moved from the Southern United States to cities in the North to find better opportunities. The Chicago Urban League was formed by a group of leaders from different backgrounds to help these new arrivals settle into the city.

What the League Does

The Chicago Urban League works to improve life for people in Chicago. They create programs, work with other groups, and speak up for important causes. Their efforts focus on making sure everyone has a fair chance at success.

Helping the Community

In 2021, the League received money from a company called Pfizer. This money helped them run a campaign to share information about vaccine safety. This shows how the League helps with important community health efforts.

Important Reports

The Chicago Urban League also publishes reports to show what challenges people face.

One important report, published in 2005, was called Still Separate, Unequal, Race: Place and Policy in Chicago. This report looked at how different neighborhoods in Chicago were still very separated by race. It showed that Chicago was one of the most segregated cities in the United States.

Another report from 2002, called The Vicious Circle: Race, Jobs and Community in Chicago, Illinois and the Nation, explored how a lack of jobs can affect communities. These reports help people understand big issues and find ways to solve them.
