Chicharrero 02
A sculpture called Homenaje al Chicharrero (Homage to the Chicharrero) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Chicharrero is a special nickname for people who live on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. This name first came from the people of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. They used it for the people of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Why? Because the people in Santa Cruz often ate a simple, cheap fish called chicharro. Today, "chicharrero" can mean anyone from Tenerife. It also describes things like typical foods, drinks, or even behaviors from the island.

The Chicharrero Song

There is a very popular song often heard during Carnival celebrations. It is called "Chicharrero de Corazón." The main part of the song, called the chorus, goes like this:

"Chicharrero, chicharrero, chicharrero de corazón. Salta a la calle y dale al tambor que el carnaval ya empezó."

This means in English:

"Chicharrero, chicharrero, Chicharrero at heart. Jump into the street and bang the drum, because Carnival has begun."

Sometimes, the word "empezó" (begun) is changed to "llegó" (arrived). This changes the meaning slightly to "because Carnival has arrived." This fun song helps everyone get excited for the big Carnival party! The song is based on a tune by the Chilean music group "Mala Junta" called "Chileno de corazón."
