About Chihiro Amano's Career

Early Life and First Films

Chihiro Amano was born on July 30, 1982, in Japan. Before becoming a filmmaker, she worked in the business world for five years. She then decided to follow her passion for movies.

Amano made her first film, Sayonara Muffler, in 2009. This movie was shown at film festivals, including the Cineastes Organization Osaka EX. Her second film, Cast the Die!, was part of the PIA Film Festival in 2010. In 2011, her film Snipping Girl was shown internationally at the Japan Filmfest Hamburg. It also competed at the PIA Film Festival that same year.

Making Award-Winning Short Films

In 2012, Chihiro Amano released a short film called The Confessions of Figaro. This film was about four junior high school boys exploring growing up. It won the Grand Prize Award and the Audience Award at the Shitamachi Comedy Film Festival in Tokyo. It also received the Runner-up Prize at the 2012 Aichi International Women's Film Festival. The film was even shown at the International Women's Film Festival in Seoul, South Korea.

Another short film by Amano in 2012 was Neverland in Gamagori. This fantasy film followed an eleven-year-old boy's exciting adventure. It first appeared at the 4th Okinawa International Movie Festival.

Her 2013 film, All Is Vanity, was a family drama. It was shown at the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival.

Breaking Barriers as a Director

Chihiro Amano is one of the few women directors in Japan. In a 2012 interview, she shared that she sometimes had to work part-time jobs to support her filmmaking. She believes that working hard and succeeding professionally helps open doors for more female directors in Japan.

In May 2014, Amano made her first commercial film, No Touching At All. She has continued to direct films, including Mrs. Noisy in 2019 and Sato and Sato in 2025.
