The Children's Booker Prize was created by the Booker Prize Foundation in October 2025. This exciting award celebrates the best new fiction books for children aged eight to twelve. It joins the famous Booker Prize for adult English books and the International Booker Prize for translated works.

The Children's Booker Prize is given every year. It recognizes amazing stories published in the United Kingdom or Ireland. These books can be originally in English or translated from other languages. The winning author receives a prize of £50,000.

Gaby Wood, who leads the Booker Prize Foundation, explained the goals of this new award. She said it aims to find future classic books for children. It also wants to encourage more young people to read. The prize hopes to help grow a love for reading that lasts a lifetime.

Discovering the Children's Booker Prize

This section explains more about this special award for young readers.

What Makes a Book Eligible?

For a book to be considered for the 2027 prize, it must have been published between November 1, 2025, and October 31, 2026. Publishers can submit books for the first prize starting in early 2026. The very first winner will be announced in February 2027.

How Does the Judging Process Work?

A panel of three adult judges first creates a shortlist of eight great books. Then, three child judges join them to help choose the final winner. The first panel of judges will be chaired by Children's Laureate Frank Cottrell-Boyce. He is a well-known author for children.

Prize Money and Sharing Books

The winner of the Children's Booker Prize receives £50,000. Each of the shortlisted authors also gets £2,500. If the winning book is a translation or a graphic novel, the prize money is shared equally. It goes to both the author and the translator or illustrator. For "highly illustrated" books, the publisher decides how the prize is shared.

The Booker Prize Foundation works with the AKO Foundation. Together, they plan to give away 30,000 copies of the shortlisted and winning books. This project aims to inspire even more children to enjoy reading for fun.
