Chilevisión (often called CHV) is a TV channel in Chile that you can watch for free. It is the third oldest TV network in Chile. The University of Chile started it on November 4, 1960. Today, it is owned by Paramount Networks Americas.

How Chilevisión Started

Early Days of Channel 9

In 1959, the University of Chile was doing experiments with television. They realized they could start a TV channel. The university's leader, Juan Gómez Millas, decided to make this happen. He wanted the channel to be a project for the whole university.

Some people at the university were not sure about starting a TV channel. They thought it was not what a university should do. But others, like Eugenio González, believed TV could be a great way to share culture and education. They thought university TV should be about culture. This idea won, and the channel project moved forward.

Setting Up the Channel

In May 1960, the university created a special department for TV and other media. Leopoldo Castedo became its first director. Raúl Aicardi, a journalist, was put in charge of the TV channel itself. These leaders wanted to make sure the channel was well-managed, cultural, and worked properly.

The university wanted Channel 9 to be a truly academic project. They believed TV could help with public education and scientific progress in Chile. One early idea was to use TV to help people in rural areas who didn't have much access to education.

Chilevisión's Journey Through the Years

Changes in Ownership

Over the years, the TV channel changed hands several times. In 1993, the University of Chile sold a big part of its TV channel to a group called Grupo Cisneros. This is when its name changed to Chilevisión.

Later, in 2000, it was sold to Claxson Interactive Group. Then, in 2006, a Chilean investor and future president, Sebastián Piñera, bought it.

Becoming Part of Big Media Companies

In 2010, Turner Broadcasting System Latin America (which later became part of WarnerMedia) bought Chilevisión. However, the university still owned the actual TV frequency (like the radio wave it broadcasts on). Chilevisión used this frequency through a special agreement, like renting it. This agreement ended in 2018.

Then, in 2021, ViacomCBS (now called Paramount) bought Chilevisión from WarnerMedia. This sale was approved in July 2021 and finished in October 2021.

Watching Chilevisión Outside Chile

Chilevisión International is a special version of the channel for people living in Australia and Oceania. It started in Australia in 2007 and in New Zealand in 2008. Also, the channel TVN has a service called TV Chile that shows some Chilevisión programs to Chileans living in other parts of the Americas.
