Channel History
How Chilevisión Started
In 1959, the University of Chile was doing experiments with television. They found that they could start a TV channel that would work all the time. The university leaders decided to create this channel.
Some people at the university were not sure about starting a TV channel. But others, like Eugenio González, thought it was a great idea. They believed TV could be a powerful way to share culture and education. This idea won, and the university decided to move forward.
In May 1960, the university created a special department for TV and other media. Leopoldo Castedo became its first director. Raúl Aicardi, a journalist, was put in charge of the TV channel itself. These leaders worked to make sure the channel was a proper university project.
The university's goal was for the TV channel to help with public education. They wanted it to share scientific and human knowledge. They even thought TV could help people in rural areas who might not have access to much education.
Channel Ownership Changes
The University of Chile owned the TV channel for many years. In 1993, the university sold a large part of the channel to a company called Grupo Cisneros. At this time, the channel's name changed to Chilevisión.
Later, in 2000, it was sold again to Claxson Interactive Group. Then, in 2006, a Chilean investor and former president, Sebastián Piñera, bought it.
On August 28, 2010, Turner Broadcasting System Latin America agreed to buy Chilevisión. This sale was completed on October 6, 2010. However, the university still owned the TV frequency (the signal it broadcasts on). Turner used this frequency through a special agreement, like a lease.
More recently, on April 5, 2021, ViacomCBS (now part of Paramount) announced it would buy Chilevisión from WarnerMedia Latin America (which owned Turner). This sale was approved on July 5, 2021, and finished on October 1, 2021. So, now Paramount owns Chilevisión.
What's on Chilevisión?
Chilevisión mostly shows talk shows, news programs, and talent shows. It is one of the most-watched TV channels in Chile. It usually ranks second in viewership, after Mega.
Some of its popular shows include Contigo en la mañana (a morning show), Chilevisión Noticias (the news), and local versions of famous shows like The Voice. Other popular programs are La divina comida and Podemos hablar.
Watching Chilevisión Overseas
Chilevisión International is a special version of the channel. It broadcasts its shows to people in Australia and Oceania. This international channel started in Australia in October 2007. It then launched in New Zealand the next year.
Another channel, TVN's TV Chile, also shows some Chilevisión programs. This is for Chileans living in other parts of the Americas.
