Chioma Ajunwa-Opara (born December 25, 1970), also known as Chioma Ajunwa, is a famous Nigerian former athlete and football player. She made history as the first Nigerian to win an Olympic gold medal. This happened at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. She was also the first Black African woman to win Olympic gold in a field event.
Chioma Ajunwa is a member of the Nigeria Police Force. She is the only woman ever to play in the FIFA Women's World Cup (for football) and also compete in the Olympics (for track and field). In 2017, she started the Chioma Ajunwa-Okpara Foundation. This foundation helps find new sports stars in Nigeria.

Chioma's Early Life
Chioma Ajunwa was born in Ahiazu-Mbaise, Nigeria. She was the youngest of nine children. Her family was very poor. Her father passed away when she was young. Her mother had to raise the large family by herself.
When Chioma was 18, she got into university. But her mother could not pay the fees. So, Chioma thought about becoming a motor mechanic. However, her mother did not approve of this idea.
Playing Football
Before becoming a track and field star, Chioma Ajunwa played football. She was part of the Nigerian women's team, called The Falcons. She played with them in the 1991 FIFA Women's World Cup.
Even though she was a skilled player, she often stayed on the bench. This meant she did not get to play much. Chioma later said she did not regret leaving football. She felt she made a bigger mark in athletics.
Becoming a Track and Field Star
Chioma Ajunwa was a talented track and field athlete. She was best at the 100m sprint, 200m sprint, and long jump. She won a bronze medal in the 4 x 100 metres relay at the 1990 Commonwealth Games.
She also won gold medals in the long jump. These wins were at the African Championships in 1989 and the All Africa Games in 1991. In 1992, she faced a ban from the sport for four years. She always said she was innocent.
Olympic Gold Medal
After her ban ended, Chioma Ajunwa made history. She became the first West African woman to win an Olympic gold medal in track and field. She was also the first Nigerian to do so. This amazing win happened at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
She won the women's long jump event. Her winning jump was 7.12 meters. She achieved this on her very first try in the final. In 2003, she shared her feelings. She said she worked hard for her country. But she felt forgotten later on.
Awards and Recognition
Chioma Ajunwa received many honors for her achievements.
National Award
After winning Olympic gold in Atlanta '96, she received a national award. She was given the title Member of the Order of Niger (MON). She felt that the Nigerian football team received more recognition. She believed she deserved more for her individual gold medal.
Community Honor
Imo State, her home state, gave her a special chieftaincy title. This is a high honor in the community.
Nigeria Golden Jubilee Independence Awards
On October 1, 2010, Nigeria celebrated 50 years of independence. As part of this, President Goodluck Jonathan honored 50 important Nigerians. Chioma Ajunwa was one of them. She was recognized for her contributions to the country's development.
