Her Career Journey
Chitra Ramkrishna started her career in 1985. She worked as a chartered accountant. This means she was an expert in managing money and finances. Her first job was at the Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI).
Later, she spent two years at the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). SEBI is like a referee for the stock market. After that, she went back to IDBI. In April 2013, she became the managing director and CEO of the NSE. She took over from Ravi Narain.
Important Events and Investigations
Understanding Co-location
In 2016, there was an investigation about something called "co-location." Co-location is when trading companies place their computer servers very close to the stock exchange's servers. This helps them trade a tiny bit faster.
SEBI looked into how this was managed at the NSE. They found some issues related to how co-location was handled. As a result, Chitra Ramkrishna was asked to return some of her salary. She was also not allowed to work with certain market companies for five years.
The 'Himalayan Yogi' Investigation
In February 2022, SEBI shared some unusual findings. They said that for about 20 years, Chitra Ramkrishna had been getting advice from an unknown person. This person was called a 'Himalayan yogi'.
This person was said to have advised her on important decisions. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) looked into this matter. They investigated how business information was shared.
