Chlodulf of Metz facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Saint Chlodulf (also known as Clodulphe or Clodould) was an important religious leader who lived a long time ago. He was the bishop of Metz, a city in what is now France, for about 40 years, from around 657 to 697. He is remembered for his dedication to his church and his community.

Who Was Saint Chlodulf?

Chlodulf was a significant figure in the early Middle Ages. He came from a powerful and religious family, and he played a key role in the Christian church during his lifetime.

Family and Early Life

Chlodulf was born around 605. His father was Arnulf of Metz, who was also a bishop of Metz before him. This shows that Chlodulf came from a family with strong ties to the church. He also had a brother named Ansegisel, who held an important political position as a mayor of the palace in Austrasia. Before Chlodulf became a bishop, he was married and had a son named Aunulf.

Becoming a Bishop

In 657, Chlodulf became the bishop of Metz. He was the third person to hold this important religious position after his father. Even though some people said he wasn't very religious when he was younger, he took on the role of bishop and served for four decades.

His Time as Bishop

As bishop, Chlodulf worked hard to improve the church. He spent time and effort decorating the main church in Metz, the Cathedral of St. Stephen. He also had a close friendship with Gertrude of Nivelles, who was the sister of his brother's wife, Begga. This connection shows how important family and religious networks were at the time.

Legacy

Saint Chlodulf passed away in Metz on June 8, 696 or 697. He was buried in the church of St. Arnulf. In a town called Nivelles, people honored him as Saint Clou, especially because of his friendship with Saint Gertrude. His special day, or Feast Day, is celebrated on June 8.
