Chocolat Poulain is one of the oldest chocolate brands in France. It is famous for its chocolate bars, both for eating and for cooking. They also make a chocolate drink mix called Poulain Orange. The company's symbol is a jumping foal. This is a clever play on words because "Poulain" means "foal" in French.

The Story of Chocolat Poulain

How It All Started

The company was founded by Victor-Auguste Poulain. He began making chocolate in large amounts in 1848. This happened in a town called Blois, in France.

Victor-Auguste Poulain had a big idea. He believed that chocolate should be for everyone. He wanted to sell it to many people, not just a few.

Making Chocolate for Everyone

He was very smart about how he made chocolate. He used new factory methods to produce it faster. This helped make chocolate more affordable for families.

He also created many fun advertisements. These ads were often aimed at children and families. This helped make Chocolat Poulain very popular. In 1893, his business became a limited company.

Sponsoring the Tour de France

In 1975, Chocolat Poulain became a sponsor of the Tour de France. This is a very famous bicycle race. They sponsored the "mountains classification" part of the race.

This is when the famous polka dot jersey was first used. The jersey's design was inspired by an old cyclist named Henri Lemoine. People loved the polka dot design so much that it was later used on their chocolate bar wrappers!

Who Owns Chocolat Poulain Now?

Over the years, Chocolat Poulain has been owned by different companies. In 1988, Cadbury Schweppes bought the company.

Then, in 2010, it was sold to Kraft Foods. This company later became Mondelēz International. Since 2017, Chocolat Poulain has been part of a company called Eurazeo.
