Chocolate Lake is a popular spot in the Armdale area of Halifax, Nova Scotia. It is surrounded by houses, a hotel, and a city beach. Because it is close to Downtown Halifax, many swimmers and families visit Chocolate Lake in the summer.

About Chocolate Lake

Chocolate Lake is not a natural lake. It was made by people digging out a quarry. A quarry is a large pit where stone or other materials are dug from the ground. Even though it is man-made, small fish called minnows have been seen near the beach.

The city of Halifax regularly checks the water quality at Chocolate Lake. This helps make sure it is safe for swimming. The lake got its name from a chocolate factory that used to be on its shores. This factory was one of many small businesses in the area.

Fun at the Lake

During the summer, the beach at Chocolate Lake has lifeguards. They are on duty from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. The city also provides changing rooms and washrooms for visitors.

Near the beach, you can find other fun things to do. There are tennis courts and basketball courts. There is also a playground for younger kids. Across Herring Cove Road, you can find the Chocolate Lake Recreation Centre. This is a community center run by the city.

Did you know that Chocolate Lake is even mentioned in a song? The Canadian singer Jenn Grant talks about Chocolate Lake in her song called "Dreamer." You can hear it around the 1:52 mark!

Getting to Chocolate Lake

Chocolate Lake is easy to reach. It is close enough to walk to from the West End, Quinpool District, and Armdale areas of Halifax. Many other neighborhoods are also nearby.

You can also get there using Halifax Transit buses. Routes 14 and 9A/9B will take you close to the lake. If you are driving, there is a small parking lot off Melwood Avenue.
