About Chokotoff Candy
How Chokotoff Looks
The Chokotoff candy has a chewy chocolate caramel inside. This part is about 30mm long, 15mm wide, and 15mm tall. It is shaped like a slanted block. A crunchy dark chocolate shell covers the caramel. This shell is about 2mm thick.
The candy wrapper is dark brown paper. This color reminds you of chocolate. The ends of the wrapper are twisted closed. They have a gold houndstooth pattern. The middle part of the wrapper is gold and brown foil. It shows the names "Chokotoff" and "Côte d'Or". You can also see the company's elephant logo there.
What Does "Chokotoff" Mean?
The name "Chokotoff" comes from two words. "Choko" is short for chocolate. "Toff" is short for toffee.
The people who created it also made a clever wordplay. In Dutch, the word tof means nice, great, or enjoyable. So, the name also suggests that the candy is really good!
New Flavors
In 2010, Côte d'Or made a new kind of Chokotoff. It still had the same classic caramel center. But this new version used white chocolate for its outer shell.
Where Chokotoff is Made
In June 2011, the Kraft Foods company owned the Côte d'Or brand. They announced a plan to move Chokotoff production. They wanted to move it from Belgium to Eastern Europe by 2013.
Since its beginning, Chokotoffs were made in Halle, Belgium. The plan was to make them in Lithuania instead. But they would still use Belgian chocolate.
Many people, especially the workers, were upset about this. They felt it was important for this famous Belgian candy to stay in Belgium.
In February 2012, a Belgian workers' union, the BBTK, shared good news. They announced that Chokotoff production would stay in Halle. This decision helped save many jobs in Belgium.
