Chonnettia Jones is an American scientist who studies genetics and how living things develop. She has been the leader of an organization called Addgene since 2022. Before that, she worked at the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research and the Wellcome Trust, helping to guide important scientific work.

Learning and a Career in Science

Chonnettia Jones is an expert in genetics and developmental biology. This means she studies how traits are passed down through families and how living things grow and change from a single cell. She earned her Ph.D. (a high-level university degree) at Emory University. There, she was a special research fellow, which is like a student who also does a lot of scientific research.

Studying How Things Grow

At Emory, Dr. Jones focused on developmental neurobiology. This field looks at how the brain and nervous system develop. Her big research project, finished in 2005, was about how a certain gene affects the eyes of fruit flies. Her professor, Kevin Moses, helped guide her through this important work.

Leading Science Programs

After her studies, Dr. Jones taught at universities in America. Later, she managed a science program at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Janelia Research Campus. This institute supports many top scientists.

In 2012, Dr. Jones joined the Wellcome Trust. This is a large charity that funds health research. Her job was to see how well their funded projects were doing. By 2016, she became the director of insight and analysis at Wellcome, helping them understand the impact of their work.

In April 2020, Dr. Jones became the vice president of research at the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research in British Columbia, Canada. This foundation supports health research in that area. Then, in May 2022, she took on her current role as the executive director of Addgene. Addgene helps scientists share important research materials, making it easier for new discoveries to happen.
