Chonnettia Jones: A Scientist's Journey

Early Life and Education

Chonnettia Jones is a scientist who focuses on two exciting areas: genetics and developmental biology. Genetics is the study of genes and heredity, which means how traits are passed down from parents to children. Developmental biology looks at how living things grow and change from a single cell into a complete organism.

She studied at Emory University, where she earned her Ph.D. This is a very high degree that shows someone is an expert in their field. While at Emory, she was a special research scholar. Her studies focused on how brains develop. In 2005, she completed her main research project, called a dissertation. Her advisor, a professor who guided her research, was Kevin Moses.

Her Career in Science

After finishing her studies, Chonnettia Jones became a professor at universities in America. She then moved on to manage a science research program at the Janelia Research Campus. This program was part of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, which supports important scientific discoveries.

In 2012, Jones joined the Wellcome Trust. This is a big charity that funds health research. Her job was to see how well their funded projects were doing. She became the director of insight and analysis at Wellcome in 2016. This meant she helped the organization understand the impact of its work.

Later, in 2020, Chonnettia Jones became the vice president of research at the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research in British Columbia, Canada. In this role, she helped guide research efforts in that region.

Since May 2022, she has been the executive director of Addgene. Addgene is a non-profit organization that helps scientists share special research materials called plasmids. Sharing these materials helps speed up scientific discoveries around the world.
