Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Christ Missionary and Industrial College (CM&I), also known as Christ's Holiness School in its early days, is a special school in Jackson, Mississippi. It is a parochial school, which means it is connected to a church. This school has a long history of serving African American students. A historical marker was put up in 1992 to celebrate its important past.

The School's Journey

Early Beginnings

The school started in 1897 as Christ's Holiness School. It was founded by the Church of God in Christ, which later became the Church of Christ (Holiness) U.S.A.. In 1908, the school moved to its current home on Main Street. At that time, it was renamed Christ Missionary & Industrial College.

School Spirit and Sports

The students at CM&I are known as the "Crusaders," which is their school mascot. Their school colors are royal blue and white. CM&I has several sports teams, including baseball, basketball, and football.

In 2000, the school made history. Its team became the first all-black team to join a competition held by the Mississippi Private School Association (MPSA). This was a big moment because the MPSA was originally formed during a time when many schools were separated by race. CM&I's participation showed how things were changing.

Leaders and Challenges

Over the years, many leaders have helped guide the school. G. G. Mosley and Chas. P. Jones were among the principals who led CM&I.

Like many places, the school has faced tough times. In 2020, the school was damaged by vandalism. Then, in February 2021, an ice storm caused more damage to the buildings on campus.

Many students have graduated from CM&I, including Willenham Castilla.
