Christine Berl was born in New York City. Her father, Paul Berl, was a musician who played piano for the famous singer Victoria de los Ángeles.
Her Education
Christine studied music at Mannes College of Music. She earned a degree in piano in 1964. Later, she studied composition at Queen's College and received her master's degree in 1970. She also learned advanced music theory.
Her Dance Training
Christine Berl also loves to dance. She studied ballet in New York with Russian teachers. After that, she learned Egyptian-style Oriental dance. She studied with famous choreographers like Yousry Sharif and Mahmoud Reda in Cairo, Egypt.

Berl creates music using a special style she calls "Chakra form." This style uses modern music techniques. Her piece "Elegy" from 1974 uses this form completely. She has helped Tirreno Records as a music consultant. A famous pianist, Peter Serkin, first performed her piece "Lord of the Dance" in 1989. He played it again in 1990.
Other pianists have also performed her music. Carlo Levi Minzi recorded "Elegy" and "Lord of the Dance." "Dark Summer" was written for the singer Frederica von Stade. It was asked for by the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society in 1989. Richard Goode played the piano for this piece. "Elegy" was also performed by Andre-Michel Schub in 1976 and by Emanuel Ax in 1988.
