The painting Christmastide Divination (which means "Святочное гадание" in Russian) was created by the Russian artist Konstantin Makovsky around 1905. It shows a special winter tradition called Christmastide, or svyatki, happening inside a cozy Russian log house called an izba. In the painting, young women are trying to guess their future using an old folk method with a rooster.

About the Painting

This artwork captures a moment from a traditional Russian holiday. It shows seven women gathered in a dimly lit room. The light from the moon outside shines through a window, creating a mysterious glow.

What is Christmastide?

Christmastide, or svyatki, is a special time of year in Russia. It's a period of holidays that follows Eastern Orthodox Christmas. This time was often filled with celebrations, games, and old traditions. One popular tradition was fortune-telling, especially for young people hoping to learn about their future.

Guessing the Future: Divination

Divination is a way people tried to predict what would happen in the future. In the painting, the girls are using a method called alectryomancy. This word comes from ancient Greek and means "rooster divination." It was a common way to guess things like who someone might marry.

The Rooster's Prediction

In the painting, five of the young women are focused on a rooster. The rooster is pecking at grains scattered on the floor. The girls are carefully counting how many grains the rooster eats. They watch to see if he pecks more than twelve grains.

The number of grains left behind was very important. If the number of remaining grains was even, it meant a marriage would happen very soon. If the number was odd, it meant the marriage would happen in the next year. It was a fun and exciting way for the girls to imagine their future.

A Cozy Russian Home

The scene takes place inside a traditional Russian log house, or izba. You can see details that make the home feel warm and lived-in. To the left, an older woman is shown sleeping peacefully on a bench. In the upper left part of the painting, there's an "icon corner." This is a special place in Russian homes where religious icons are kept, often lit by a candle. It shows the importance of faith in their daily lives.

Who Was Konstantin Makovsky?
