Who Was Christopher Bennet?

Christopher Bennet was born in a place called Somerset, England. His father was John Bennet. Christopher started studying at Lincoln College, Oxford, in 1632. He earned his first degree in 1636 and a master's degree in 1639. Later, he also got a medical degree from Cambridge University in 1646.

Becoming a Doctor

In 1646, Christopher Bennet became a licensed doctor with the College of Physicians in London. This was a very important group for doctors. He became a full member, called a Fellow, in 1649. He worked as a doctor first in Bristol, then moved to London. There, he became quite famous for his medical skills.

His Early Death

Sadly, Christopher Bennet's life ended early. He died from tuberculosis (consumption) when he was only 38 years old. This happened on April 30, 1655. He was buried in a church in London.

What Did Christopher Bennet Write?

Christopher Bennet is most famous for his book about consumption. The book was called Theatri Tabidorum Vestibulum. It talked about different kinds of "wasting diseases." He focused more on understanding how diseases work (what we now call pathology) rather than just treatments.

New Ideas in Medicine

In his book, Bennet often wrote about cases he had seen and dissections he had done. This was different from just quoting old medical books. His book also showed the very first picture of an inhaler. An inhaler is a device used to breathe in medicine. His way of studying diseases was seen as an example of the Baconian method. This method involves observing things carefully and experimenting to find answers.

Other Works

Bennet also helped to publish another book. It was called Health's Improvement, or Rules for preparing all sorts of Food. This book was written by Thomas Muffett and came out in London in 1655.
