In 1807, he was chosen as an Aldermen. An Alderman was a senior leader in the city government. He kept this important role until he died. He was also elected as a Sheriff of London for a year, from 1807 to 1808. A Sheriff helped keep law and order in the city.

Later, from 1817 to 1818, he became the Lord Mayor of London. This was one of the highest and most respected positions in the city. He was also the President of St Thomas' Hospital from 1818 until his death. This hospital helped many people in London.

Serving in Parliament
