The Saint Helena Chromis (scientific name: Chromis sanctaehelenae) is a special type of fish that belongs to the Pomacentridae family. This family includes many colorful fish often found in coral reefs, like damselfish and clownfish. The Saint Helena Chromis was first described by W.H. Edwards in 1987.

Where It Lives: Home Sweet Home

This fish is quite unique because it is found only around the island of Saint Helena. This means it is an endemic species, which is like saying it's a native resident that you won't find anywhere else in the world!

Adult Saint Helena Chromis fish like to live in specific places. You can usually find them swimming around rocky areas or reefs made of rubble (broken rocks) on the seafloor. These spots provide them with shelter and places to find food.

How It Lives: Habits and Family Life

The Saint Helena Chromis has interesting ways of reproducing. They are what we call oviparous, which means they lay eggs. This is different from animals that give birth to live young.

When it's time to have babies, the male and female fish form a pair. They work together during the spawning process, which is when the eggs are released and fertilized.

After the eggs are laid, they are demersal. This means the eggs sink and stick to the bottom, usually to rocks or other surfaces on the seafloor. The male fish plays a very important role here: he guards the eggs to keep them safe from predators. He also makes sure the eggs get enough oxygen by fanning them with his fins. This helps the baby fish develop properly inside the eggs.
