What is a Chronicle?

How are Chronicles Different from History Books?
A chronicle is different from a regular history book or a story. A history book often picks and chooses events. It might leave out things that are not seen as very important. A history book also tries to explain why things happened and how they connect.
However, a chronicler (the person writing the chronicle) is more focused on just recording events. They want to document everything in the exact order it happened. They might include small details that a historian might skip. For example, a chronicle might mention a bad harvest or a local flood. Who Wrote Chronicles?
Many chronicles were written during the Middle Ages. Often, monks in monasteries or scribes working for kings would write them. These writers kept careful records of important events. They recorded things like:
