The Church of San Martín (in Spanish, Iglesia Parroquial de San Martín) is an important church located in the town of La Gineta, Spain. It was officially recognized as a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1992. This means it's a special historical building that Spain wants to protect.
History of the Church
The Church of San Martín was built in the 16th century. This was a time when many amazing buildings were being constructed across Europe. Even though it was built in the 1500s, it used an older style called Gothic.
Gothic Style Details
Gothic architecture is known for its tall, pointed arches and detailed stone carvings. The ceiling inside the Church of San Martín has very complex patterns, which are typical of Gothic design. These patterns are called tracery.
Renaissance Influences
The main entrance of the church, called the portal, shows a different style. It's built in the Renaissance style. This style became popular after the Gothic period. The Renaissance style often features more balanced shapes and classical designs. Experts believe this beautiful portal was designed by famous architects like Jerónimo Quijano or Andrés de Vandelvira.
The Main Altar
Inside the church, there was once a magnificent main altar, known as a retablo. This retablo was finished in 1648. It was made in the Plateresque style, which is a very detailed Spanish Renaissance style. It looked like silverwork, which is what "Plateresque" means. This impressive piece of art is thought to have been created by Juan Sánchez Cordobés. Sadly, much of this beautiful retablo was damaged during the Spanish Civil War.
