The Reredos: A Special Altar Piece
The reredos is a large, decorated screen or wall that stands behind the altar in a church. The one in Santa María de Palacio is very special. It was made by talented artists from Italy.
This reredos was actually first built for another church nearby, the Co-cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda. However, the church leaders there decided not to use it. Why? Because it had the family symbols (called coats of arms) of the person who donated it, Arnao de Bruselas. So, it was given to the Church of Santa María de Palacio instead.

The Chapel of Santa Engracia
Inside the church, there is also a special area called the Chapel of Santa Engracia. This chapel was built in the 14th century.
It was founded by a very important person named Don Rodrigo Alfonso de Medrano. He was the lord of Agoncillo and owned its castle of Aguas Mansas. He was also the chief crossbowman for King Alfonso XI of Castile. This means he was a very skilled soldier who led others who used crossbows in the king's army.
