The Church of Santa María de Palacio is a beautiful old church in Logroño, Spain. Its name in Spanish is Iglesia de Santa María de Palacio. This church is very important. What is a Reredos?

A reredos is a large, decorated screen or wall that stands behind the altar in a church. It often has carvings, paintings, or sculptures. It's like a fancy backdrop for the most important part of the church.

The Church's Special Reredos

The reredos in the Church of Santa María de Palacio is quite unique. It was made by talented artists from Italy. This reredos was actually meant for another church first. It was supposed to go into the Co-cathedral of Santa María de la Redonda.

However, the leaders of that church, called the cathedral chapter, decided not to use it. Why? Because the reredos had the family symbols, or "coats of arms," of the person who donated it, Arnao de Bruselas. The chapter didn't want these symbols in their cathedral. So, the reredos was then given to the Church of Santa María de Palacio instead.

The Chapel of Santa Engracia

Inside the church, there is a special section called the Chapel of Santa Engracia. This chapel was built a long time ago, in the 14th century.

Who Built the Chapel?

The person who started this chapel was Don Rodrigo Alfonso de Medrano. He was a very important person back then. Don Rodrigo was the lord of Agoncillo and owned its castle of Aguas Mansas. He was also the chief crossbowman for King Alfonso XI of Castile. A crossbowman was a soldier who used a crossbow, a powerful weapon similar to a bow and arrow. Being the "chief" meant he was in charge of all the crossbowmen for the king.
