Church of Santiago (Lorca) facts for kids
The Church of Santiago, also known as St James Church, is a historic building in Lorca, Spain. It is famous for its beautiful architecture. Sadly, this church was badly damaged during a strong earthquake in 2011.
Earthquakes and the Church of Santiago
Lorca, where the Church of Santiago stands, has experienced several earthquakes. Scientists have studied the ground in this area. They found that a special crack in the Earth's crust, called a fault, has caused unusual earthquakes. These earthquakes can be a danger to people living nearby. Research shows that at least six strong earthquakes, measuring above a seven on the Richter scale, have hit this Spanish fault in the past.
The 2011 Lorca Earthquake
On May 11, 2011, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck Lorca. This earthquake caused a lot of damage to the Church of Santiago. The domes, roofs, and arched ceilings inside the church completely collapsed.
Before the 2011 earthquake, the church had been repaired and rebuilt. During one of these repairs, a layer of concrete with metal mesh was added. This made the building heavier. Some experts believe that this extra weight might have made the damage worse during the earthquake. It could have caused more harm to the walls and led to the roof falling in.
