The Church of St. James the Apostle is a historic church located in Oakland, California, United States. Today, it's also known as St. James Episcopal Church or Iglesia Episcopal de Santiago. This church has been holding services every week since 1858, without ever stopping! It's so important that it's recognized as a California Historical Landmark.

History of the Church

The Church of St. James the Apostle was started by Bishop William Ingraham Kip. Its very first service was held on June 27, 1858.

Original Building

The first church building was finished around 1860. This original building is still used today, but now it serves as a parish house. A parish house is a building often used for church offices, meetings, or community events.

Current Church Building

The church building you see today was constructed later, in 1886. It was designed by a team of architects from San Francisco called Wright & Sanders.
