The Church of the Advent is a really old and special church building located in Limestone, Maine. You can find it on Church Street, just a short distance from Maine State Route 229. This church was built way back in 1881. It has a cool mix of old building styles, like Gothic and Romanesque designs.

It was built for a church group called the Episcopalians. This group started in 1872 and is thought to be the very first organized church in Limestone. Because of its history and unique look, the church was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. This means it's an important historical site!

Discovering the Church's Design

The Church of the Advent is made of wood. It has a very steep roof that stands out. There's also a small tower on the left side of the main building.

The front of the church, which faces west, has two tall, narrow windows. These windows have rounded tops. The main entrance is also rounded and is found in the tower. Above the main door in the tower, there's a narrow rectangular window. Higher up, you'll see an open space for bells, called a belfry. A pointy roof sits on top of the belfry.

Behind the main church, there's a newer part. It's a single-story addition made of concrete blocks. This part has a flatter, gently sloped roof.

Inside the Church

When you step inside, you'll see that the walls and the ceiling are covered in beautiful stained wood. The ceiling is shaped like a barrel, which is a cool design.

Long ago, people said the church ceiling was plastered. But now, it's all wood. Some original things are still there, like old oil lamps on the walls. Imagine how they lit up the church back then!

A Look at the Church's History

The Episcopal church group that built this church started in 1872. They were the first church group in Limestone. Before they had this building, they met in a school.

The church building wasn't always in its current spot. It was first built on Grand Falls Road. That's where the Protestant Cemetery is today.

Moving the Church Building

In 1896, something amazing happened. The church building was moved! Workers used log rollers and horses to slowly pull the church to its new location. This big move took several months to complete.

Later, in 1904, the church tower was made taller. This was done to make room for the belfry, where the church bells are kept. It's incredible to think about how much history this building has seen!
