A Churchill is a super popular snow cone from Costa Rica. It's a sweet, icy treat that many people love, especially on a hot day. It's known for having lots of different yummy ingredients mixed together.

What is a Churchill?

A Churchill is more than just a regular snow cone. It starts with shaved ice, like a typical snow cone. But then, it gets many special toppings. These toppings make it a unique and delicious dessert.

What's in a Churchill?

The basic ingredients for a Churchill are:

  • Shaved ice
  • Sweet syrup (often kola syrup, which is red)
  • Condensed milk (a thick, sweet milk)
  • Powdered milk

But what makes a Churchill extra special are the added ingredients. These can include:

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Pieces of fruit, like tamarind or other local fruits
  • "Queque" filling, which is a type of cake or pastry filling

All these ingredients are layered together. This creates a rich and creamy dessert. It has many different textures and flavors.

How did the Churchill get its name?

The Churchill snow cone has an interesting story behind its name. It all started in the city of Puntarenas, Costa Rica. This city is famous for its beautiful beaches and delicious food.

The Story of "Quinico"

The first Churchills were served in Puntarenas. This happened way back in the 1940s. There was a local businessman named Joaquín Agüilar Ezquivel. People knew him by his nickname, "Quinico."

Quinico loved to visit the Paseo de los Turistas. This is a popular boardwalk in Puntarenas. He would often buy a snow cone there. But Quinico liked his snow cone with many different ingredients. He asked for special toppings that were not usually put on snow cones.

A Special Nickname

The people who sold ice cream thought Quinico's mix of ingredients was very unusual. They called his special snow cone "exotic." They also noticed something else about Quinico. He looked a lot like the famous British politician, Sir Winston Churchill.

Because of this resemblance, the ice cream sellers started calling Quinico's unique snow cone "Churchill." The name stuck, and that's how this popular Costa Rican dessert got its famous name!
