History of Churchville
Churchville was started by a person named John Churchman in 1854.
The Church of the Assumption
The Church of the Assumption, a Catholic church, was built in 1859. It was part of the Archdiocese of Dubuque. This church was the oldest Catholic church in the county. Sadly, it was destroyed in a fire in March 1933. But it was quickly rebuilt soon after.
Calvary Cemetery is a burial ground linked to the Church of the Assumption. It has been around since at least 1854 and is located about a mile west of the community.
The regular weekly services, called "mass," for the church parish ended on August 28, 2014. The Des Moines Diocese asked people to attend a larger church nearby. The building is still used as a special place for prayer, where mass can be held once a month and on special days.
Railroad and Population Changes
A train track was built in Churchville by the late 1800s. In 1902, Churchville had a population of 62 people. The town had some problems with the Chicago Great Western Railroad in 1917 and 1920. They wanted the railroad to fix the local stockyards, which were used for shipping farm animals to market.
Train service to Churchville stopped in July 1921. The population of Churchville grew to 80 people in 1925. By 1940, the population was 75.
