The Cincinnati Gymnasium and Athletic Club is a really old and important building in Cincinnati, Ohio. It's located right in the city's downtown area on Shillito Place. This building was made for a special club that had the same name.

The club started way back in 1853. It was created by some important people from Cincinnati, including Rutherford B. Hayes. He later became a President of the United States! In 1902, the club decided to build this amazing new home. When it was finished, this four-story building was considered one of the best sports centers in the entire country. Only the gymnasium at Columbia University in New York City was thought to be better!

What Makes This Building Special?

The Cincinnati Gymnasium and Athletic Club building has a very cool design. It's built in a style called Second Renaissance Revival. This means it looks a bit like buildings from the Renaissance period in Europe, but with a modern twist from the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Who Designed It?

The building was designed by an architect named John Scudder Adkins. He worked for a company called Werner and Adkins. They used strong materials like brick, stone, and metal to construct it.

Unique Architectural Details

If you look closely at the building, you'll see some interesting features:

  • Rusticated stone courses: These are rows of stone blocks that have a rough, textured surface, making the building look strong and old-fashioned.
  • Molded balustrade: This is a fancy railing, often found on balconies or staircases, with decorative posts.
  • Trimmed windows: The windows have special decorative frames around them.

A Historic Landmark

Because of its unique and important design, the Cincinnati Gymnasium and Athletic Club building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. This list helps protect buildings that are important to the history of the United States. It's also recognized as a Cincinnati Local Historic Landmark.
