The Story of Cinestudio

How Cinestudio Started

Cinestudio began in 1970 thanks to a group of students at Trinity College. These students transformed a large lecture hall in the college's chemistry building into a movie theater that looked like those from the 1930s. The theater was set up as a cooperative, meaning students helped run everything.

Cinestudio quickly became known for showing unique and popular films. Some of the early movies shown included The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Harold and Maude, and Pink Flamingos.

Running the Theater

Cinestudio still largely operates as a cooperative today. Two of the original founders, James Hanley and Peter McMorris, have helped guide the theater since it started. They now manage its daily activities. About 50 students and community volunteers help run the movie showings every day of the week.

In 2002, Cinestudio became an independent non-profit arts organization. This means it's separate from Trinity College, even though it still uses space in the college's chemistry building.

In 2007, the theater's ticket booth was named the Fred Pfeil Memorial Ticket Booth. This was done to honor Fred Pfeil, a Trinity College professor and a long-time volunteer and board member at Cinestudio.

What Movies Can You See?

Cinestudio shows many different kinds of movies. You can find second-run films (movies that have already been in theaters for a while), independent films (movies made outside of big studios), and classic movies.

What's cool is that people who visit Cinestudio can even help choose which movies are shown! Each year, Cinestudio also hosts several film festivals. These include The Connecticut Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, April in Paris, and the Trinity Film Festival, which showcases student films from around the world.
