The cinnamon ibon (Hypocryptadius cinnamomeus) is a special kind of bird. It lives only in the mountains of Mindanao in the Philippines. This bird is the only member of its group, called Hypocryptadius. Scientists now think it is a type of Old World sparrow. It likes to live in wet, tropical mountain forests and mossy forests that are high up, usually above 1,000 meters (about 3,280 feet).

What Does the Cinnamon Ibon Look Like?

The cinnamon ibon is a medium-sized bird. It has bright cinnamon (a reddish-brown color) on its head and back. Its wings and tail are a bit darker. Its throat, chest, and sides are a pale orange color. The belly and the area under its tail are white.

You can easily spot its red eyes and its silver-gray legs and beak. These birds often fly around with other types of birds in mixed groups. There are no other birds in its home area that look quite like it. Its calls include high-pitched squeals, a sharp "wik," and a strong "piii! piuu-piuu!" sound.

Where Does the Cinnamon Ibon Live?

The cinnamon ibon makes its home in tropical forests on mountains. These places are often called mossy forests because they are very wet and covered in moss. It lives in areas that are at least 1,000 meters (about 3,280 feet) above sea level. It can also be found at the edges of these forests.

Is the Cinnamon Ibon in Danger?

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has looked at the cinnamon ibon. They have listed it as a "least-concern species". This means that, for now, it is not considered to be in serious danger of disappearing.

Even though it only lives in a small area, many people believe it is common in the places where it is found. However, the number of cinnamon ibons is slowly going down. This is mainly because their forest homes are being lost. People are cutting down trees legally and illegally. Mining activities also destroy their habitat. Sometimes, forests are cleared to make space for farms, often using methods like Slash-and-burn.
