What Kind of Bridge Is It?
The City Bridge is a special type of bridge called a bow-string arch design. It is 650 ft (200 m) long. This design uses a curved arch above the road, with strong cables connecting the arch to the bridge deck. This helps to support the weight of the bridge and everything on it.
The bridge is a key part of Newport's Southern Distributor Road (SDR). When the SDR was finished, the main A48 road was changed to go over this new bridge. This made the City Bridge the main route for traffic passing through the city.
Special Features
On the bridge, between the two tall pillars of the arch, you can see a large emblem. This emblem shows the official symbols of the Newport City Council. It is placed on the side of the bridge where traffic travels west.
Awards and Recognition
In 2005, the City Bridge received an award. It was recognized by the British Constructional Steelwork Association for its excellent design. This award is called the Structural Steel Design Awards.
The judges who gave the award were very impressed. They said the Usk crossing showed the best of British bridge engineering. They liked its elegant design, high-quality construction, and new ways of building. They felt that Newport gained a much-needed river crossing and a beautiful steel structure.
