City Hall of Chihuahua facts for kids
The City Hall of Chihuahua is an important building in Chihuahua, Mexico. It was built in the early 1900s. You can find it right across from the Plaza de Armas and the Cathedral. This building is where the city's government works. It holds the office of the mayor of Chihuahua and the City Council. The City Hall is a famous landmark in the heart of the city.
History of Chihuahua City Hall
The story of the City Hall began a long time ago. In 1721, a building called the Royal House was built here. It was made to house the local authorities under Spanish rule. People often called it the Portals of the Municipality. Later, this old building was taken down. A new city office building started to be built in the early 1900s.
Architects John White and Alfredo Giles led the project. The new building officially opened on October 4, 1907. Don Enrique Creel, who was the governor of Chihuahua, opened it. Since then, the building has been home to the city's offices. In 2005, it was renovated again. The most noticeable change was the color of the decorations near the roof. They changed from green to a light brown.
Architecture and Design
The City Hall is a great example of Mexican architecture from the time of President Porfirio Díaz. Its style is called Neoclassicism. This style was influenced by French 'Beaux Artes' and European fashion of that era. The building has two floors. The first floor has space for art shows and special events.
One of the most interesting parts is the City Council salon. This room is decorated in a grand, almost "Olympian" style. It has large mirrors and tall, fancy Corinthian columns. There are also three beautiful stained-glass windows. These windows show the history and economy of the city. They also feature the City's Coat of Arms. Another special feature is the honorary seat for President Benito Juárez. He lived here with his cabinet and government-in-exile from 1864 to 1866. This was during the French invasion. He was given this special honor during his stay.
