The City of Raleigh Museum helps people explore the rich history of their city. It shows how Raleigh has grown and changed over time. You can see old photos and items that tell stories about the past.

How the Museum Started

The idea for the museum came from a Raleigh historian named Beth Crabtree. After she passed away, Mary Cates worked hard to make the dream come true. In 1990, Mary Cates brought together a group of people who wanted a museum for the city.

In 1991, many people supported the idea. Steps were taken to create the museum. The first exhibit opened in 1993. It was in the Borden Building in Fred Fletcher Park.

In 1998, the museum moved to its current home. This is the first floor of the Briggs Hardware Building. It's on Fayetteville Street in the heart of downtown Raleigh. The museum has been there ever since, sharing Raleigh's history.

What the Museum Does

The museum used to be run by a non-profit group. But in July 2012, the City of Raleigh took over. The City now manages the museum. However, a group called the Friends of the COR Museum also helps out.

The museum offers many different exhibits. It also has educational programs. These programs teach about various parts of Raleigh's history. The museum also keeps a large collection of photos and old items from Raleigh. This helps them serve the city by preserving its past.

Supporting the Museum

The Friends of the COR Museum is a special group. They help the museum by raising money. They also support other projects. This group used to be the main board for the museum. That was when the museum was a non-profit organization. Now, they continue to help the museum share Raleigh's story.
