Sandstone shapes in the Ciudad Encantada de Bolnuevo

Las Gredas de Bolnuevo, also called Ciudad Encantada (which means "Enchanted City"), are amazing rock formations. You can find them right on the beach in Bolnuevo, a town in Murcia, Spain. These cool sandstone shapes have been carved by wind and water over thousands of years. They are considered a very special natural monument.

What Makes the Bolnuevo Gredas So Special?

The Gredas de Bolnuevo are famous for their incredible and often strange shapes. Wind and water have worked together for ages to sculpt these rocks. You'll see shapes that look like giant mushrooms or tall, thin towers. They seem to stand up against gravity, almost like magic! It's like nature's own art gallery.

What Are These Rocks Made Of?

These fascinating formations are mostly made of a type of clay called "gredas." This clay has a yellowish color because it contains a lot of sand. Inside the clay, there are also tiny ancient remains called microfossils. These microfossils are super old, dating back about 4.5 million years to a time called the Pliocene period.

Over millions of years, the sandstone has been slowly worn away. This process, called erosion, is caused by natural elements like wind and water. This is how the unique mushroom-like and almost vertical shapes were created. They truly look like they are defying the laws of gravity!
