The St. Joseph Cathedral, also known as Ciudad Guzmán Cathedral, is a beautiful Catholic cathedral in Ciudad Guzmán, Mexico. In Spanish, its name is Catedral de San José.

This important church is the main building for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Ciudad Guzmán. This means it's the home church for the bishop of the area. The cathedral was built in the late 1800s and was finished around the year 1900.

History of the Cathedral

The cathedral that stands today was not the first one in the city. Construction on the current building began in the mid-19th century.

Construction Timeline

The first stone of the new cathedral was officially placed on May 27, 1866. The person who led this event was the parish priest at the time, Antonio Zuniga Ibarra.

After many years of work, the cathedral was finally ready. It was officially consecrated, or blessed and dedicated to God, on October 8, 1900.
