Clara Cheeseman was born in Doncaster, England in 1852. When she was very young, her family moved to New Zealand. They arrived in Auckland on 4 April 1854. Their ship was called the Artemesia.

Clara's father was Thomas Cheeseman. He was a Methodist minister, which means he was a leader in a Christian church. He hoped the warmer climate in New Zealand would help with a throat problem he had.

Clara had four brothers and sisters. Her brothers were William and Thomas. Her sisters were Emma and Ellen.

Clara's brother, Thomas, became very important in New Zealand. He was the curator of the Auckland Museum. A curator is someone who takes care of a museum's collections.

Clara, Emma, and Ellen often went with Thomas on his field trips. These trips were exciting adventures where they explored nature and collected interesting things for the museum.

Her Writing Career

Clara Cheeseman loved to write. She wrote many articles for magazines. One of her articles was printed in the Australian Ladies' Annual in 1878.

She also wrote a novel, which is a long storybook. Her novel was called The Rolling Stone. It was published in 1886.
