The Claremont Hotel is a very old and famous hotel in Southwest Harbor, Maine. It was built way back in 1883. This makes it one of the few hotels from the 1800s that are still standing on Mount Desert Island. The hotel has many different places to stay. These include 24 rooms in the main building. There are also six rooms in the Phillips House. Plus, there are 14 small cottages. The hotel sits on a large piece of land that looks out over Somes Sound.

The Main Hotel Building

A Look at the Historic Building

The main part of the Claremont Hotel was built in 1883. A retired sea captain named Jesse Pease built it. It was one of the first big hotels on Mount Desert Island. The building is made of wood. It has three and a half stories. It has a special roof shape and a strong stone base.

The front of the hotel faces west. It has many windows. There is a covered entrance for cars near one end. A porch goes around the south and east sides of the building. The east side faces Somes Sound. From this side, a big grassy area goes down to the water. There is even a boathouse there!

Inside, the hotel has been updated. But the owners made sure to keep its original old-fashioned style from the Victorian era. The building has 24 private rooms today. It also has Xanthus, which is the hotel's restaurant.

Who Owned the Claremont Hotel?

Jesse Pease and his wife ran the hotel until he passed away in 1900. His wife kept running the hotel until she died in 1917. However, she sold the property in 1908. A local doctor named Joseph Phillips bought it. Phillips and later his son ran the hotel until 1971. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. This means it is a special historic place.

Cozy Cabins and Cottages

Staying in a Cabin

The Claremont Hotel property also has fourteen cabins. These cabins are placed so guests can enjoy views of Somes Sound. They come in different styles. Some look like old-fashioned Maine log cabins. Others have more modern designs.

Most cabins can sleep up to four guests. Some smaller ones only have space for two. The largest one, called the Rowse House, can fit eight people. You can rent these cottages between May and October. Most are rented by the day. The Rowse House is rented by the week.
