The Clark Perry House is a very old and special home located on Court Street in Machias, Maine. It was built way back in 1868. This house is a great example of the Italianate style of architecture in Washington County, Maine. It was added to the list of important historical places, called the National Register of Historic Places, in 1979.

What Makes the Clark Perry House Special?

The Clark Perry House is found in the town of Machias. It sits on the north side of Court Street, which is also United States Route 1A. This house is a classic example of a New England home. It has a main building connected to a carriage barn at the back.

How Does the House Look?

The house is made of wood and has two and a half stories. It has a special roof shape called a "clipped-gable roof." The outside walls are covered with "clapboard siding," which are long, thin boards. The house sits on a strong granite foundation.

The front of the house faces south. It has two main sections. On the right, there's a cool window area that sticks out, shaped like a polygon. On the left, you'll find the main entrance. Both the front porch and the window area have decorative railings on top. They also have fancy, tooth-like decorations and brackets under the roof edges. These details are also seen on the main roof of the house. The porch is held up by strong wooden posts. Many windows on the front and sides have decorative covers above them, shaped like small gables.

The History of the Clark Perry House

Clark Perry was born in Machias. He owned a general store in the town. He decided to have this house built in 1868. A builder named Haskell Preble constructed the house. Haskell Preble might have even helped design it.

A Unique Design for Its Time

When the house was finished, people noticed it right away. The local newspaper, the Machias Union, wrote about it. They said it looked "odd" and was "quite different in style from any other house in town." This shows how unique and modern the Italianate design was for Machias back then.
