Life and Work

Early Life and Education

Clement Corbet was born around 1576. He was one of six sons of Sir Miles Corbet, who was a high sheriff in Norfolk. A high sheriff was a very important official in a county, helping to keep law and order.

Clement went to Trinity Hall, Cambridge, a famous college, in 1592. He studied law there and worked hard. He earned his first law degree, a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), in 1598. He then became a fellow at his college, which meant he was a senior member and teacher. In 1605, he earned an even higher degree, a Doctor of Laws (LL.D.).

Important Roles and Positions

Clement Corbet became a well-respected expert in law. In 1607, he was chosen to be a Professor of Law at Gresham College in London. This was a special college where professors gave free lectures to the public. He taught there until 1613.

In 1611, he became the Master of Trinity Hall, Cambridge, which is like being the head of the college. At the same time, he was also the chancellor for the diocese of Chichester. A chancellor is a legal officer who advises a bishop on church law.

In 1612, he joined the College of Advocates at Doctors' Commons. This was a group of top lawyers who specialized in certain types of law, like church law and international law.

Leadership at Cambridge

Clement Corbet also took on a big leadership role at the university. From 1613 to 1614, he served as the vice-chancellor of Cambridge. The vice-chancellor is the main leader of the entire university, overseeing its daily operations and academic life.

Later, in 1626, he was appointed vicar-general and principal official to the bishop of Norwich. This meant he was a chief legal advisor and administrator for the bishop in that area. He resigned from being Master of Trinity Hall the following year.

Later Life and Legacy

Clement Corbet passed away on May 28, 1652. He was buried in the church at Belaugh, Norfolk. A monument with a Latin message was put up to remember him. He had one son, Samuel, and five daughters with his wife, Elizabeth Kemp. His portrait was kept at Trinity Hall, given to the college by another important scholar, Thomas Baker.
