Cleofé Elsa Calderón (born October 26, 1929 – died March 19, 2007) was an important scientist from Argentina. She was an agrostologist, which means she studied grasses. Her work helped us understand more about different types of grasses around the world.

Cleofé Calderón's Scientific Journey

Cleofé Calderón began her studies at the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina. There, she learned from a famous botanist named Lorenzo Parodi. This early training helped her become an expert in the field of grasses.

Discovering New Grasses

In October 1971, Cleofé Calderón went on a special trip to collect plants. During this trip, she found a completely new type of grass! This discovery was so important that scientists later named the new group of grasses after her: Calderonella. This shows how much her work was valued.

Finding a Lost Grass

In 1976, Cleofé Calderón made another exciting discovery. She was in Bahia, Brazil, with her assistant, Talmon Soares dos Santos. Together, they found a rare grass called Anomochloa. This grass had been "lost" to science for a long time, meaning it was very hard to find.

By finding Anomochloa, Cleofé Calderón was able to collect samples. These samples were then studied in detail. Scientists looked closely at the grass's shape and how its cells were built. This study confirmed that Anomochloa was indeed a true grass. Her work helped us learn more about this unique plant.
