Exploring Bahia's Land
The capital city of Bahia is Salvador. Many other important cities are found here, like Feira de Santana, Vitória da Conquista, Itabuna, Ilhéus, and Juazeiro. Most of Bahia's land is about 200 meters (650 feet) above the sea level. The longest river in Bahia is the São Francisco River. Did you know that Salvador used to be the capital of Brazil? It was the capital from 1549 to 1763.
How Bahia Makes Money
Bahia is one of the richest states in Brazil, ranking sixth overall. The state's economy is based on several key areas. These include industry, agriculture, and animal husbandry (raising animals). Tourism is also very important, as many people visit Bahia's beaches and historic sites. Mining for valuable resources and various services also help the economy grow.
Bahia's Amazing Culture
Bahia is famous for having the strongest African influence in Brazil. This can be seen in its unique culture and customs.
Martial Arts and Music
One example is capoeira, a special martial art that combines fighting, dance, and music. Bahia is also the birthplace of many African-derived music styles. These include samba, afoxé, and axé. These musical forms are a big part of daily life and celebrations in Bahia.
Delicious Food
Acarajé is a very popular street food in Bahia. It is made from mashed black-eyed peas, fried in palm oil, and often filled with shrimp. Acarajé is more than just food; it is a symbol of Bahia's rich culture and history.
