Industry facts for kids

In the world of business and money (called economics), we group different types of manufacturing (making things) and services (doing things for others) into categories called industries. The word "industry" comes from a Latin word that means "working hard at a job." There are many different industries, such as mining (getting minerals from the ground), farming (growing food), and logging (cutting down trees). Big changes like the Industrial Revolution helped create many new industries.
An industry usually makes products or offers services that are very similar to each other. For example, all cars made by a car industry are meant to do the same job. Industries often use special ways of making things, like mass production (making many items at once) and division of labor (where different people do different parts of a job).
History of Industries
Early Production and Slavery
For a very long time, people have found ways to make goods and provide services. Sadly, one old way was through slavery. This meant forcing people to work without pay. Slavery was used because it was a cheap way to produce goods. It was often used for things that needed a lot of work to make many items, like in large farms or mines. Today, international law has made slavery illegal everywhere.
The Industrial Revolution
The Industrial Revolution was a huge change that happened from the mid-1700s to the mid-1800s. Before this time, most things were made by hand. But during the Industrial Revolution, people started using machines to make goods instead. This made it possible to produce things much faster and in larger amounts. The rise of machines and factories also played a part in ending slavery in Europe and North America, as new ways of production became more common.
