The Federal University of Bahia (Portuguese: Universidade Federal da Bahia, often called UFBA) is a large public university located mainly in the city of Salvador, Brazil. It is the biggest university in the state of Bahia. UFBA is also known as one of Brazil's most respected places for learning.
Since it is a public university, students do not have to pay tuition fees to study there. To get into the university, students must pass an annual test. This test is known as the "ENEM" (National High School Exam).

History of UFBA
UFBA was officially created on April 8, 1946. It was formed by several existing schools. These included schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Philosophy, Economics, Law, and the Polytechnic School. The university officially opened its doors on July 2, 1946. Its oldest part, the School of Medicine, has been around since 1808.
Becoming a Federal University
Four years after its creation, UFBA became a "federal" university. This happened on December 4, 1950. The government passed a law that made it part of the Federal System of Higher Education. Since then, it has been known as the Federal University of Bahia.
Early Education in Bahia
The history of higher education in Bahia started much earlier. In 1808, the first medical school in Brazil was set up in Bahia. This was ordered by the Portuguese court. Other schools followed, like the Faculty of Pharmacy in 1832 and the School of Law in 1891. These older schools later became part of UFBA when it was formed in 1946.
Student Life and Courses
UFBA offers many different study programs for students. It has 57 courses for undergraduate students. These are for students earning their first university degree. The university also has 82 courses for postgraduate students. These are for students who want to continue their studies after their first degree. There are also more than 100 other advanced courses.
Campuses and International Links
UFBA is one of the first universities in Brazil. It has several locations throughout Salvador, the capital of Bahia. There is also a campus inland, in Vitória da Conquista. In 2008, UFBA had three main campuses. The university also has agreements with 32 countries around the world. These include countries like the United States, Sweden, Argentina, and New Zealand. These agreements allow for cooperation and exchange programs.
