The Federal University of Bahia (also known as UFBA) is a big public university in Salvador, Brazil. It's the largest university in the state of Bahia.
Students can study there without paying tuition fees. This is because it is a public university. To join UFBA, students must pass an annual test. This test is called the "ENEM" (National High School Exam).

History of UFBA
UFBA was officially created on April 8, 1946. It started by bringing together several older schools. These included schools for Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy. There were also schools for Philosophy, Economics, Law, and a Polytechnic School.
The university officially opened on July 2, 1946. Its oldest part was the School of Medicine. This school was actually the oldest center for higher education in Brazil.
Becoming a Federal University
Four years after it was created, UFBA became a federal university. This happened on December 4, 1950. The government passed a law that made it part of the Federal System of Higher Education. Since then, it has been known as the Federal University of Bahia.
Early Education in Bahia
The history of higher education in Bahia goes back even further. In 1808, the first medical school in Brazil was started in Bahia. This was the Medical School of Bahia. Other schools followed over the years. These included the Faculty of Pharmacy (1832) and the School of Fine Arts (1877). The School of Law (1891) and the Polytechnic School (1897) also opened. All these schools later became part of UFBA in 1946.
Student Life at UFBA
UFBA offers many different study programs. It has 57 courses for undergraduate students. These are for students getting their first university degree. There are also 82 courses for postgraduate students. These are for students who want to study even more after their first degree.
UFBA is one of the first universities in Brazil. It has campuses in different parts of Salvador. It also has a campus in Vitória da Conquista, which is in the southwest of Bahia. In 2008, UFBA had three main campuses.

UFBA works with universities in many other countries. It has agreements with 32 countries around the world. These include places like the United States, Sweden, Argentina, and New Zealand. This allows students and teachers to learn from different cultures.
